Organic Vegetable Gardening

Are you thinking of creating your own organic vegetable garden and growing your own vegetables?  Don't know where to start?

The best thing for me about organic vegetable gardening is not the money I save on my monthly shopping bill but the satisfaction I get when I can harvest my own vegetables and enjoy the delicious flavours they bring.

When we moved to Northumberland 6 years ago we had never contemplated having a vegetable garden however, the house we bought had an area already set aside for growing your own fruit and veg.  Since then we have expanded the area and now grow a variety of fruit and vegetables which my young boys love helping harvest.

So why grow an organic vegetable garden?  It's BETTER.  Better for the vegetables and fruit you are growing and better for the soil.  More importantly it's better for YOU.

If you can grow your fruit and vegetables in natural ways they may not look as perfect to the eye as shop bought vegetables but they will have a lot more flavour.  There will be no chemical or poison residues left on them, you will know that they are 100% safe for you and your family to eat.  In addition to this there are no air miles/transportation of the vegetables and you can pick them immediately for consumption.

To achieve your organic garden you need to plan ahead.  Where is your vegetable garden going to do, what are you going to dig into the soil?, what vegetables, fruit and herbs are you going to grow? and what preventative and proactive measures are you going to take?

The short days of winter are the time to start thinking about what you want to grow this year in your veg garden.  For inspiration and ideas why not become a Wikaniko Allotment Gardener and sign up to receive FREE weekly organic gardening tips.
